Melbournian Lion Dance

Part One: China Town Lion Performance

After joining a lion dance team (CYSM) last sunday... and training for 5hrs in the near 40deg heat... I was proud to be part of this group performing in Chinese New Year!

These kids are amazing!

Performances almost always have 'standing up tricks' i.e.
o lion head sitting on the lion tail's head
o lion head standing on lion tail's shoulders
o lion head standing on lion tail's thighs

Other entertaining tricks include: drunken lion (after a couple of beers), lion eating fish, lion drenching a little girl with a bucket of water...

Its so funny what shop owners give the lion to 'eat'! i.e. oranges, a pot of flowers, watermelon, lettuce, a cold dish of duck, jelly fish etc with lots of sauce... ?!?!?!

Its a good excuse to do damage and to make a big racket at chinese new year! :)

Now, Im so inspired to learn and to play the drums really well!! There are limited roles to what a girl can do in a lion dance performance :P
- Instruments - Symbols, Gong, Drums
- Lion - the head?? too heavy tho... tail? only if there is a girl lion team i guess!

Their routine for each small shop consists of:
o 3 bows
o High drum, Low drum and finding the lure
o Eating
o Lighting fire crackers
o 3 bows

After each routine.. I usually inhale a LARGE amount of smoke and my eardrums suffer (even with ear plugs...) :P

But all in the name of fun eh? :)
